Quick art update.

So Things have been pretty busy around here. The Animation Program is quite a lot of work, but I'm enjoying it. I still feel like I'm not quite up to par drawing-wise compared to some of the other people in my year, but I feel like I'm getting better, and I'm learning a lot. So besides this inferiority complex that I've internalized, and is secretly messing around with my confidence, I am enjoying myself.

There are a few other things I need to scan and stick on here, but here is some of the stuff I've been working on recently.

I'll try and post an update on my life soon. But first I need to take some photos.

This was the first prompt: Tree Crabs of the Lonesome forest. I sort of designed him after a coconut crab, but the teacher said he had the face of a rapist/ sex offender. I was going for creepy, and those are the creepiest kinds of people I know. So I guess it works?

This is a practice on value, using markers is super unforgiving. but hey, this was just a practice,

This was for the Urban Vinyl toy designed around the theme of "Disturbed Circus" I'm still not quite friends with the markers yet, so I'm not super happy with the tones added, but hey, this is a learning experience

this was for the imaginary friend one. I hashed out the base drawing super late last night... I think? I don't know. I've been staying up way too late really and the days are blending together. Anyway, there are some issues with this that I need to fix now that I'm looking at it after not looking at it for several hours, but its a little late, I turned it in already. Oh well. Que Sera Sera. I'll fix it for myself one day.

End of the Semester

So, Its the end of the semester. I'm actually really bummed I'm not staying around for Spring or Summer. I feel like my life is so much more interesting out here. I mean, check it out:

My friends and I played Holi at the festival of colors!

I made a delicious quiche. With so much cream and bacon and cheese. All by myself! I also made an apple pie. No photos of that though... It was even more delicious

I applied to animation again. Good heavens I want to know if I have a major or not right now. (that top one got oddly cut off. oh well)

I was an extra in a cowboy movie. We went to a Saloon! how cool is that?

and besides that, I went classic skating and had cool fun dates and I made friends with fantastic people. I'm really going to miss everything and I think it would be fun to stay in the summer for a cool chiller atmosphere. I'm trying to get excited about heading back to Maryland. perhaps I'll make a list of why its awesome there, because I can only think of like, 2 things right now...

New Art

Some stuff that was in my rejected sketchbook.
Click on them to see them at a normal size.
Sorry I didn't have a scanner so I used my camera instead.

This one was cool in my mind, but like what often happens, I try something and I screw it up so it looks extremely less cool on paper than in my mind. For damage control I used this weird shiny t-shirt paint on her skirt and umbrella. and cheap markers, and gouache on the rest
Thats what I get for looking at Degas.

I saw this movie on TV on some saturday afternoon when they show lame movies when I was like 12 or 13 and thought the song was cool:

I found the video on youtube, and was all inspired and crap. I actually really like the wolf on this.
That girl sounds like Annie.

I like the idea of traveling. whether or not its really that cool is yet to be found out, seeing as I've never been anywhere really. That inspired this.

And now you know why I was rejected twice from BYU animation.
I didn't want to be in it anyways.
I like having no direction to take my life.
Like a ship that lost the coordinates to their destination during a freak storm.
I am lost in the ocean and don't know which way to go to get to my future
Now what?

Art History.

Well I don't have any good recent art, so now its time to look at art history through the ages. Ages of about 13-18 to be specific.

This is something I did when I was 13 I think. My Dad's office had this art competition for the kids of the people that worked there. I submitted this. I worked SO hard on it. I pretty much thought I was going to get first place for my age group. Well I got 3rd place after these two girls. The Huong Sisters. One was younger than me, and it made me super angry that I was bested by someone that was my junior. At the time I really liked drawing cats. Apparently I didn't know what cats looked like. Also the perspective is messed up. Lets just say its my fancy artists way of making sure you can see the fish on the table. Also the cat's cushion is way too far in the foreground to actually be right next to the table. C'est la vie. Its art.

I drew this when I was in 10th grade. We were reading the Odyssey. There is this part where Athena turns into a little boy to tell somebody something. The book always talked about her sparkling eyes, so we put glitter in them. We meaning my group. We had to present a scene from it and we had this thing where we moved my drawings around on the chalkboard. We also had hills and treasure. Anyway, Athena has bad posture. I dunno she's not all that original looking. I'm still not great at making people look unique. Well girls. I'm ok at making men look individual. Its hard to make a girl look pretty and individual at the same time for me.

Florals!

This is my second entry in that art contest the next year. I think my skills improved. I drew some fake orchids my mom had. They were actually white, but a yellow light was shining on that and I couldn't capture it well. I am bad at doing things subtilely. So I just turned it into a yellow orchid. Its supposed to be in front of a window, but it sort of turned out looking more like a cross or something. I almost ruined this by trying to make it look more like a window, since people get touchy about religion around here. Anyway it was alright enough to make it to third place. Thwarted again by the Huong Sisters.

I did this for the ward directory. The Relief Society President heard I had art skills, and asked me to draw it without ever seeing my drawings. Talk about a leap of faith. I think I did this when I was 17 or so. She was impressed because I think she was expecting a lame bouquet with traditional flowers like daisies or roses, but I added all of these bright big flowers and put them in a shiny rainboot. I had a thing for shiny red rainboots. And rain in general at this time. I sort of felt there was something romantic about rain or something.

Did this when I was 18. I was running out of time for my AP portfolio so I was just doing anything. I did this with color pencil. My mom got these tulips from her visiting teacher so I took them and drew them. I didn't finish the first night and the next day they looked kind of different. and they continued to do so until they opened up super wide and started dropping petals. Again its in front of a window since I'm stupid and unoriginal. At least it kind of looks more window like. Sort of. I really failed at the jewelry box I think. Big surprise. I got a 1 on my AP portfolio. I was really relieved when I heard BYU didn't take AP art scores.

This is the one that finally gave my success in the art contest. Tai Shan the baby panda was born that year and D.C. was CRAZY about pandas. So I drew one. a not half bad one if I say so myself. I got first place. My life is full of this kind of thing, Almost making it a couple times and then succeeding in the end after I work hard. I was 15 I think. Maybe 16 tops.

nother stupid AP artwork. I was really crunched for time so I was doing anything. Its a boring bear on a boring couch, the end.

Did this when after I was a BYU for a while. Its crazy. I like it. The girl is still sort of boring and generic. I don't know how to fix that.

Compared to This Which I did less than a year before, I think I've improved.

I like Tutus and giraffes, and this Michael Jackson song called carousel. That inspired this. unfortunately I did that psychedelic one on the back of this page in my sketchbook, and my copic markers bled through.I lightened up her face i=digitally because I used chalk pastel on this and it sort of made her face look dirty by the end. It looks sort of funky, but I think It would make a cool painting. I kinda want to do more circus pictures. I was 17 when I did this maybe 18

Carousel - Michael Jackson

I like vintage-y looking people. So I drew this chick. She's boring. 18.

Disillusioned

Oh boy, so two day ago I started a REAL JOB. None of this babysitting business even though I made bank doing that. No. I work in this Property management company, and I am some kind of assistant or something. I answer calls sometimes, and put invoices in numerical order. And also read off numbers of those invoices to this guy who probably doesn't actually need me to do that. Mostly I just read articles online so it looks like I am not being dumb being on facebook, although yesterday I did beat my personal best score for tetris. I also played Sudoku. I am learning a lot about the swine flu, and Obama's Presidency. And about museums.

In this endeavor, I have discovered something about myself. I REALLY dislike not doing anything. I feel like I would rather be using my time, doing something USEFUL. Like I don't know... getting better at my drawing skills. I have to say, I am disillusioned by Real Jobs. I can't imagine why on earth anyone would ever invent such a mindless job, let alone do one day after day. I am glad that (Lord willing) I am going into a field in which I will be doing something fun and creative with my time.

Voila the art that illustrates the life.

Just FYI Its not so bad that I have this job Per se. It irks me that I have to do essentially nothing for 5 1/2 hours a day when I could be working at something that will ultimately help my future. Ineed time to work on improving my art skills so I can grow up and NOT have a job where I sit at a desk and waste time all day.

I sort of wish I had gone into retail. If I worked at the mall at least I'd get a discount.

I HATE Tuesday

So I REALLY abhor tuesdays. And this one is going especially bad. Actually Yesterday is the root of my problem. Actually make that Sunday.

Sunday: I wasn't feeling super great because, well, I am a girl, if you get my drift, and I was really fatigued and in pain. So I felt really badly when I was at the temple dedication broadcast and I sort of kept drifting in and out of sleep. The dedication was pretty great, President Monson is pretty awesome. I liked the part at the end where we got to wave hanky's around and then sing.

Anyway, when I went back home a. I had No food since the Cannon Center Closed at 3, and thats when church got out, and our ward was the only one that was in session for the whole 3 hours. and b. I still felt wretched and couldn't concentrate on anything. So I didn't really get started on any of my homework. I felt that ill. Unfortunately for me, I got dreadfully behind in my homework.

Monday: Because I got so behind on sunday I had a ton to do last night. In the form of writing a paper that was 5-7 pages long. I could only use 2 online sources. I went to dinner, Skipping FHE and, oh thats right McKay sees me walking in and is like "Oh you're going to eat? I'll be right in" And I'm kind of like, no I don't really want to sit by you thanks so I sit down with Cami and Chanel and I can see him cruising around the cannon casually getting food and I get up to get some cereal and he finds me, and this is our conversation, Him "Hey where are you sitting?"
Me. "over there with those twins"
Him: "Oh Is there room"
Me: "Uh I dunno.."
And then he follows me over to the table and sits there and we chat for a bit, and then, I leave and I went back to my dorm to write my paper.
Then I realized that the books I had were not adequate to answer my prompt for the paper so I high-tail it to the library at like 9:00 to get information. I involved a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, and ALL of the books about the man were in a FOREIGN LANGUAGE! HOW am I supposed to get information from a book that is in GERMAN? I was so annoyed, So I had to fluff up the little information I got online. Anyway push comes to shove, after the library closes at 12 I went back, I finished at 3. and went to bed. Good thing it was only a rough draft that had to be turned in, and only one of my peers will be proofreading it.

Then, after I was snug in my bed, I got one of those excruciating leg cramp things, and had to ease my leg back into a comfortable enough state to sleep.

This morning I woke up totally exhausted because of my late night + the freak leg cramp (which happened in both legs) and I got up to go to class. I got ready in less than 10 mins, even though it hurt to walk around since every time my legs do that thing it hurts the next morning. and I shuffled off to class and was early for once in my life. Then we learned about post-impressionism.

Then I sat in the Wilk, being angry that everything closes for devotional and I can never get anything to eat on tuesdays. I saw McKay in the distance. I am pretty observant since back in middle school I wanted to be a spy and so I learned to observe my surroundings. Usually I see a lot of people I know in any given place when they don't notice me. I was glad he didn't see me at any rate. Then I did my french homework.

I looked at my phone and it was freaking out. The screen turned pink and blacked out. Then I looked later and it was fine. and later it freaked out in different ways. Its busted.

Then I went to french. Then went directly to film class, and looked up french recipes during that. The best clip in that was this one from a B movie called "The Leopard Man" in which this white girl, pretending to be hispanic was like "Mamacita I can't go out and get corn meal for you a leopard escaped yesterday and they haven't caught it yet" And the mom was like "Have you ever seen a leopard before? No. Now go!" So the girl goes to the close by store and they are closed so she has to go far away to this other store where se has to go under this dark bridge. She goes through ok and gets the corn meal and on the way back she goes under this other section where its lighter, and she sees 2 glowing eyes. Rather than turn back like a sane person, she thinks she imagined it or something and she walks in and SURPRISE! the leopard is there. Next thing we know, she's banging on the door, screaming "Mamacita the leopard is following me! Let me in!" this whole shot is from the inside of the house and the mom is like "stop that screaming you better have the corn meal bla bla bla, the mom doesn't let her in. Then we hear the leopard scream and attack her and the mom freaks out but the door doesn't open and the mom and the brother try to break it down but it was too late, and we see a trickle of blood under the door.

I also discovered in that class that Buster Keaton was built.

Then I finally went to taco bell and got some food. Then I went home, and then went to the Creamery on 9th and got ingredients to make some Madelines, this french cookie-type thing, and went over to Kelli's apartment to make them. After I made them, thy were decent by the way a little toasted since I didn't have a madeline tin, I went to get my figure drawing stuff, and ran to figure drawing class, where this dude named Dallon, who I met the past week since he was friends with my friend Thomas, was the model. It was sort of funny.

Then I went home and worked on french.

I'm sort of writing this from hindsight, I started this at the height of my stressful day, but now I've mellowed out and I'm not so stressed.

Oh wait. I have a French test tomorrow. :(

Under Rennovation

Well, I am in figure drawing class right now and to tell you the truth it is kind of demoralizing. I do feel like I am getting better at drawing people though. Just that my getting better feels like its worse than everyone else's. But I am going to try to get better. Now I am motivated to practice even more. Anyway, I think I am going to write a letter to Disney and ask for advice, because I need all the help I can get. So, here goes nothing I guess.

popular!

I feel as if I suddenly became popular or something. The other day, another boy asked me to go to a comedy show with him on saturday. So now I have a date on friday, and kind of another one on saturday.  Now all I need is for the guy in my sociology class to ask me out... I pretty much have a huge crush on him. I want to friend him on facebook so bad, but I don't want to seem like a creep stalker because we only have one mutual friend and I was looking especially hard for him or something...

ARt!
so I colored a lot of this thing with hi-lighters and they didn't scan well. at the bottom where it says "love" in real life its much more vibrant, same with everything else that looks like the colors have been bleached out.
